Salt air and air conditioning: protecting your outdoor unit

Near the sea, salt in the air speeds up corrosion of the outdoor unit. Here is what to know on the Empordà coast.

Is my unit in a risk area?

As a general rule, installations within 1 km of the sea, or with a view of the sea, may suffer salt damage. The real risk depends on wind, obstructions and humidity.

What gets damaged

The most vulnerable parts are the heat-exchange coils, the casing and the electrical components. Corrosion reduces performance and can end in a breakdown.

How to protect it

  • Choose, if possible, a unit with anti-corrosion treatment for coastal environments.
  • Place the unit behind a wall or the building, so it does not take the sea breeze head on.
  • Use corrosion-resistant brackets and fixings.
  • Clean and check the unit regularly: built-up salt and moisture speed up the damage.

If your unit is near the sea, ask us for a check-up.
